Another Tick Off the List (otherwise known as The Day I met Nathan Fillion!)
A few months ago I found out that Malcolm Reynolds/Captain Hammer/Richard Castle/Captain TightPants himself AKA Nathan Fillion was going to be appearing at Comic Con Germany in Stuttgart. Before The List, I would have sighed, wished I could have been there and then tried to forget about it. But that was before I had set my mind on doing fun stuff so HELLS YEAH, I WAS GOING TO GERMANY! JUST TRY AND STOP ME!
Husband and I flew from Manchester to Stuttgart (the story of the journey to the con is way too long to share here but trust me, had elements of an epic quest). I was really excited as just going to the convention meant that I had a tick off The List (No 82. Attend a convention in a non-UK country).
The convention ran over two days but we just attended on the Sunday. This meant we had to squeeze everything into one day. While there, I had three chances to interact with my favourite man (you can find out here why I think he’s so damn shiny). The first of the day was the autograph session which was great as it meant that Husband could meet him too. Nathan’s right arm was in a sling and despite the many signs saying no handshakes, he was shaking everyones hand as best he could with his left. I love the fact that he asked who we were and then he introduces himself like ‘Hi, I’m Nathan’ as if you wouldn’t know who he was! We chatted for a few moments before Husband shepherded me off in a daze. Nathan was as charming in real life as I had hoped – YAY! (and ruggedly handsome too…)
The second Fillion moment was the Castle panel which he was on with Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever. The chemistry between the three of them was obvious, the panel was packed and it was a lot of fun.
And the very last thing we did on the day was the photo shoot. I’ve been to a few of these now over the course of my Adventures but this was definitely the most hurried. Obviously demand was high but I would guess that I spent less than 40 seconds getting my photo taken with Nathan which has to be a record. I realise it’s a business and people are there to make money but just sell a handful less of the photo-ops and give everyone an extra 10-20 seconds please! Such a small pocket of time would make such a difference to the experience.
Can we take a moment to fully appreciate the geeks of Germany please? I’ve been to a convention or two and have seen all types of behaviour but I have to say, my German friends are up there with the best of them. They were welcoming and friendly. As soon as they realised that we were two Scots who were trying our best to speak the few German words we knew, they switched to perfect English and never made us feel bad about it. Definitely the loveliest bunch of geeks ever. I would 100% go back to a con in Germany (searches internet for next German event).
And in a short space of time I crossed one item off The List and got a couple of part-ticks too!
Go to a convention in a non-UK country
10. Get photobombed by Nathan Fillion ( I was in a picture with him so it kind of counts)
32. Get the Firefly cast to sign my collectors edition Firefly book (the one that Joss signed!) Now I have Joss, Nathan, Sean and Mark Sheppard.
Tschüss (I learned a German word!), L-J
