Top 5 Geek Inspirations
No geek is an island…..by the very nature of fandom, there are people out there who create things you love and inspire you. I’ve been running this blog now for over a year and I’ve found my writing passion. I want to share travel and adventure from a fans point of view. It’s not something that you will find in your average travel blog but then the people who inspire me are far from average…..
Is it any surprise that Joss is on the very top of my list? He’s the person that has given me most in my fandom – Buffy and Firefly – both created and written by him. Both have characters that I care about and themes that are important to me – family, figuring out my place in the world and being a woman. Crucially, he is the person that showed me that the story is the most important thing. There might be vampires and werewolves and spaceships but the most important thing is the story.
Over the past decade I’ve read so many travel books that I’ve lost count. Some have been funny, some have been interesting and some have been downright awful. But the books that I constantly return to like an old friend are those of Bill Bryson. He manages to find adventure, not in the big epic challenges, but in the small day to day travels that normal folks like us do. I’ll never traverse the Alps using only a sleeping bag, some toothpicks and my wits to keep me alive but travel around Europe, absolutely! He finds humour in the every day and reminds me that every day can be an Adventure. Plus he looks a bit like a hobbit which warms me to him immediately.
I’m so glad that I can honestly put a girl geek on this list. Felicia has been an inspiration as she is a woman who is taking control of her own destiny and forging ahead in a traditionally male industry. Actress, producer, writer and all round lovely person, she has shown me that having boobs doesn’t mean that my geek credentials are any less than the menfolk. I watch her career with interest and cheer every time I see she is trying something new!
Nathan Fillion/Stephen Amell
I tried to pick between these two, I really did! They are both fantastic actors who appear in shows that I adore but that’s not the reason they are on the list. They are on because of the charitable work that they do. They have both realised that they can harness the power of their fans for the greater good. With Nathan it’s Kids Need to Read and with Stephen it’s, most recently, the Sinceriously campaign. Both know that 90% of their fans can’t afford auction items of black tie dinners but can afford £20 for a t-shirt or £5 to enter a raffle. It’s the small but many approach that has made a big difference to their chosen charities. And both of them are Canadian which is an automatic 10 extra cool points in my book.
