Top 5 countries that make me click on your blog
I am a travel blog junkie. I LOVE THEM and can’t get enough. Over the past few months, while building my own blog, I’ve been reading even more of these than usual. Some are informative, some are funny and some are just downright beautiful. All of them though have one thing in common…..they are usually about 5 countries that I am ever so slightly obsessed with!
Everyone has their own dream destinations – places that they would like to visit or live. Over the past few years, I have narrowed my large list of destinations down to 5. Some I’ve been lucky enough to visit, others are still on the wishlist but all of them are amazing!
If you are a regular reader of this blog you will know that I visited NZ in 2010 and the saucy temptress stole my heart. What’s not to love? Beautiful landscapes, interesting people and home of Lord of the Rings and Flight of the Conchords. Not only that but they were the first country to give women the vote and their second most popular religion (if it were recognised) is Jedi! Sounds like my kinda place. The plan is to go back over the next couple of years and do the Tongariro Crossing, which is the trek to Mount Doom (I may or may not wear hobbit feet). The perfect Geek Adventure.
I was lucky enough to visit Canada last year and cross a big item from the Geek Adventure list, visiting the town of Vulcan. I’ve always had a fascination with the country due to one major factor – the politeness of it’s residents. I’m a sucker for manners and smiles so to find out that the Canadian reputation of friendless was entirely true was heart warming for me. Add this to the fact that they have some of the most amazing scenery in the world along with some of the most vibrant cities and I’m a sucker for anything Canuck (the fact that Nathan Fillion is Canadian also helps!)
America – specifically the states of Alaska and New York
A strange combination I realise but bear with me here. I’ve never been to either of these places but both have captured my imagination in different ways. New York is GEEK CENTRAL. I can only imagine what it feels like walking through New York City and seeing another part that you recognise from a movie. In fact, visiting the Ghostbusters fire station is on the Geek Adventure list.
I also love the idea of Alaska being TOTALLY different from New York but in the same country! Ever since I saw the film 30 Days of Night, which was set in Alaska I love the idea of being so isolated and self-sufficent (minus the vampires obviously). The part of me that wants to live in a log cabin, writing all day and raising a family of dogs is fascinated by Alaska and I long to explore it myself.
Two words for you. Northern. Lights.
I’ve been told that if you go up to the top end of Scotland you can see this natural phenomena but I love the idea of Iceland. I love that Game of Thrones was filmed there, I love that they have hot geysers and volcanoes. There’s a certain mythology that surrounds the country that makes me as a geek very interested in it. It’s also meant to have a fantastic nightlife which I’m not really that interested in cos I’m an old fart.
This may sound like an odd choice since I already live here but hear me out…. I live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world and sometimes it’s easy to forget that. Scotland is probably on so many peoples dream destination lists and I’m lucky enough to already be here! There is so much of the country that I have yet to explore, even though it’s on my doorstep. This will be changing over the coming months as I explore as much as possible of it.
